Medication-assisted treatment is available across Connecticut through multiple types of providers. Office-based opioid treatment โ€” primarily buprenorphine (Suboxone) prescribed by physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants โ€” is the most accessible form of MAT and has expanded dramatically since 2023 when federal restrictions on buprenorphine prescribing were loosened. Federally regulated opioid treatment programs (OTPs) provide methadone along with counseling and case management. Addiction medicine specialists and some primary care practices also offer Vivitrol (extended-release naltrexone) as a monthly injection after a full detox.

Most private insurance plans in Connecticut cover MAT. Medicaid covers MAT in all 50 states, including Connecticut. Medicare Part B covers outpatient MAT services. If you are uninsured, sliding-fee clinics and state-funded programs may be available. Our helpline can do a free insurance benefits verification to help you understand your actual out-of-pocket costs before you commit to a program.
